5N5D - Day Five

Thursday = another dull day in the office, with a trip to the gym thrown in for good measure.

Today’s nails were Meet Me On The Star Ferry – the metallic violet colour I said I wasn’t so sure about earlier in the week. When I first painted it on I had two thoughts: 1 – it felt like a night time, going out polish and 2 – if I had to describe my friend Amy in a nail polish colour (for some really odd reason), this would be it. The colour is a violet shimmer with a plum/brown base. It’s a really unusual colour, with micro flecks of blue, green and red that the photo below has sort of captured. I can’t decide if I like it or not, but as Kat pointed out to me today, I have just had 5 different colours on my nails in 5 days and I could be colour-weary.

Outfit: Black tee, sand silk balloon pants and the excellent bangle stack my sister bought me year before last.

Ease of matching nails to outfit: Pretty easy. As long as you stick with darks and/or neutrals you should be sweet. Probably wouldn’t match your fluoro green day-glo mini-dress, but if that’s what you’re wearing then we need to talk.

Number of compliments: 4 (I count Kat’s compliment as 2 since it was very enthusiastic)

Likelyhood to wear again: 4/5. I am starting to come around to this colour and I will definitely give it another go in the near future. In fact, now that 5 nails in 5 days is over, I might just leave this on for a few more days.

So that's the last of 5 Nails in 5 Days. All of the colours I tried are from the OPI Hong Kong Collection, which hits counters next week ($19.95/bottle). My favourite is definitely the blue, but it was really cool to step outside my usual colour palette and try some new and different shades. I went through a lot of cotton pads and nail polish remover, but, all things considered, my cuticles are still in reasonable condition (thank you, OPI Avoplex cuticle oil).

5N5D - Day Four

Day Four: Wednesday

Wednesday = back in the office, lunch with a friend and then an ice-cream date with another friend (is there any better kind of date? The answer is no).

Today’s nails were Suzi Says Feng Shui – think smurf blue. As an aside, I only just learnt who this famous Suzi is and why she has so many colours named after her (Suzi Skis in the Pyrenees, Crepes Suzi-ette, Suzi Loves Sydney, Suzi Says Da! etc etc). Turns out Suzi is Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, Executive VP & Artistic Director of OPI Products Inc. This is the awesome chick who single-handedly creates every OPI Nail Lacquer shade based on each season’s fashion & beauty forecasts and then names them after herself. Can I have her job?!

Outfit: Sheer black and white top (with black bra, just FYI), camel blazer, jeans and some silverware on the wrist. Earlier in the day it had been my black leather skirt, but I changed it up quickly before my ice-cream date.

Ease of matching nails to outfit: You would think it was hard, but these nails are such a statement piece (statement pieces?) that I found I could wear them with almost anything (and I did try on a few outfits this morning because I was being indecisive).

Number of compliments: 7

Likelyhood to wear again: 5/5. I am desperately in love with this colour (and not just because of the compliments). I smiled every time I looked at my fingers.

5N5D - Day Three

Day Three: Tuesday

Tuesday = Australia Day! Can I just say how awesome it is when Monday feels like Friday and you get to sleep in on a Tuesday. Australia Day was all about swimming, going to the park and throwing some snags on the barbie (actually, we threw chicken on the barbie – don’t hold it against me). Relaxing++.

Today’s nails were Bling Dynasty – a beautiful metallic gold colour. In my opinion, it is almost like a cross between the bronze Charmed By A Snake and yellow gold Curry Up Don’t Be Late from the India collection (I have been accused of being a walking OPI dictionary on more than one occasion). This baby is a classic, true gold. It painted on well, with two coats giving sufficient coverage. I will say though that metallic nail polish is just that bit trickier to get off because of the glittery pigments. Requires extra elbow grease.

Outfit: Vintage green embroidered dress with the same belt as Sunday

Ease of matching nails to outfit: Surprisingly easy. It probably helped that it was a ‘casual day’, but the gold was like a neutral on steroids. It should be noted that the outfit being green and gold was completely unintentional.

Number of compliments: 3

Likelyhood to wear again: 3/5. A bit of sparkle never hurt anyone.

5N5D - Day Two

Monday = in the office. Our office isn’t corporate (thank goodness) but we do have to dress professionally because we have meetings with all sorts of advertising and editorial people all day. Plus working in mag-land where you are surrounded by glamorous mag hags means you try just that little bit harder in the morning (well, some days I do – did I today? You be the judge).

Today’s nails were Jade Is The New Black – the dark jade green colour, which is a much darker alternative to the Chanel jade green everyone went gaga over last year. It painted on reasonably well; decent coverage in 2 coats, but I would recommend 3 really thin coats for total opacity.

Outfit: Black dress, studded belt, black flats, silver bangle, super-frizzy humidity hair.

Ease of matching nails to outfit: Yikes! After much deliberation, I had to go with basic black. It might be alright with casual gear (I was thinking denim shorts and a couple of layers of singlets would be kickin’) but creating a "take me seriously" look was a little tricky.

Number of compliments: 0.5 (my chiropractor commented on them, but it was more an observation than a compliment)

Likelyhood to wear again: 1/5. I might put it on again in a weeks time to give it a second chance, but I felt like it was missing a bit of personality.


I call this pose "post-groceries-pre-dinner-tired&frizzy". I could definitely give Derek Zoolander a run for his money.

5N5D - Day One

Day One: Sunday

I hadn’t decided whether I was going to do this as Mon-Fri or Sun-Thurs, but since I post in the AM, the most obvious was Sun-Thurs and post the previous days outfits. Is that cool with you? Good. Glad you agreed.

Sunday = birthday brunch for Mama-bear and Toy Story double movie feature (highly recommended). The brief was comfort and style since I was out in public, but also walking to and from Fox Studios and the weather was a bit, hmm, shall we say confused? Steamy and grey. Pleasant.

Today’s nails were Chop-Sticking To My Story – the caramel/burnt orange colour, which is a rather sophisticated deep tan once it is on the nail. It painted on well; excellent coverage in 2 coats.

Outfit: Navy maxi, white singlet, denim jacket, new tan belt I bought in Melbourne, favourite Zoe Mou wooden necklace (side note: can someone teach me how to say Zoe Mou? I get comments on this necklace all the time and I feel like a right pork-chop that I can’t pronounce the brand name!)

Ease of matching nails to outfit: I was concerned at first, but this colour lends itself well to neutrals.

Number of compliments: 3

Likelyhood to wear again: 3.5/5

While you're busy relaxing on this beautiful day-of-sun, I'm frantically painting my nails and wondering WTF I am going to wear. I consider myself rather sartorially challenged, so this should be amusing. Be sure to tune in this week to see how I go.

PS - Today I am going to see Toy Story 1 & 2 in 3D. Oh my gosh, I feel like a kid at Christmas!

PS - Speaking of WTF, my wonderful friend who is a kindergarten teacher and Assistant Principal (so important!) gave me the most awesome office supply ever last week. A WTF? stamp. That's right; everything that lands on my desk now gets a WTF? stamp.

I'm late...I'm late...for a very important date...

I have been hannnnnnnging out for Alice in Wonderland, which hits cinemas in March. Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter? Ingenious! Matt Lucas as TweedleDee and TweedleDum? Superb! Helena Bonham Carter as The Red Queen? Could there be anyone more appropriate?! It's going to be a visual Tim-Burton-style feast, and I can't wait to gobble it all up.

Chances are, when I go to see it I will be wearing one of the nail polishes from the OPI Alice in Wonderland collection. Those clever cookies have captured the essence of what I think this movie will be like, and bottled it all up so I can take it home. Cheers, OPI. There are four colours in the collection and they are pure, unadulterated FUN. No room for mistakes here, we're painting these roses red, baby!

Absolutely Alice is an amazing blue glitter with fine gold flecks through it - perfectly captures Alice in her blue dress and blonde hair.
Thanks So Muchness is a berry red metallic shimmer which is highly pearlized and absolutely delicious.
Mad As A Hatter is partying like it's 1999 - total glitter confetti fun!
Off With Her Red is probably the most grown up and mature of the polishes, in a beautiful creamy tomato red. Definitely the sensible alternative, with potential to be a cult red.

As you can see, there is a lot of personality packed into such a small capsule collection. My hit pick? Mad As A Hatter. Don't let anyone ever tell you that you are too old for glitter nail polish. Put it on and go dancing - this polish is made for fun!

It's game, set and match with the Flip

I went down to the Australian Open earlier in the week and, being the spoilt little blogger that I am, I got to take a new Flip Video Mino HD camera with me to try and capture some of the action. Dude, I was SO impressed!

It's the size of a mobile phone (not as wide as my Nokia E71, but a bit fatter), so it easily slips into your pocket or handbag, it's light as a feather and all you have to do is flick the power button on the side and you are ready to roll. Add to that one-touch HD record, instant playback & delete, and a rechargeable battery and it practically looks after itself. Little to no effort required - just point and shoot.

It has 60 minutes worth of 'tape' and when you're ready to upload you just flip open the top and the usb pops out. The pop open usb is the single defining feature that sold this gadget to my little sister. Once you're connected to the computer, you can upload directly to myspace and youtube (how very Gen Y) and it comes with software so you can snap photos from your vids and turn your footage into movies.

I have to say, out of all the features, I was most impressed with the quality. On the little screen it might not seem like much, but the footage is crystal clear and sharp when you get it on the PC (that's probably the HD). I got my very clever cookie friend Kat to cut a few little bits of what I taped into a short video (please don't judge me for looking so crap - holy amazeballs I was cold and had been rained on!!) - let me know what you think!

My hair is too Rootalicious for you baby

Have you ever found that miracle product that seemed to work so perfectly the first time you used it that you figured it must have been a fluke? “Nothing is this good”, you think, “must have been a lucky day. I’m sure it won’t erase my dark circles/slim my waist/turn water into wine like this next time”. But you do try it again next time and it does work again. And again. And then you start to believe that this miracle product is the stars aligning and bringing you a product that will change your life in such a revolutionary way that you will wonder how you ever lived without it.

Hold on to your banana-phones people...I have found my miracle product. Yes, it’s a big call, but I am totally 100% prepared to stand by this. It might not be your miracle product (they are unique to everyone, like belly buttons) but it has changed my life. Indulge me for a moment while I spout more hyperbole to illustrate my point.

To say I have fine, limp hair is an understatement. It’s a combination of good genes and never knowing how to control it (I’m guilty of being very liberal with product, which just makes it more limp). I tried O&M Rootalicious root lift mousse and it’s idiot-proof for heavy-handed applicators with fine hair (OMG! That’s me!). Rootalicious! Could there be a cooler name for a product? I give it a 9.5/10 for awesome name-ness. The only way it could have gotten a 10 is if it was called super-happy-fun-times-rootalicious, but that’s because I have a predilection for Japanese pop-culture.

So, awesome name, awesome bronze packaging AND it actually works. All true. Rootalicious adds volume to the roots by forming an invisible barrier around the roots and lifting them up, like little scaffolds supporting the foundations. You can also run it through the hair, like I do, to give your hair all over fullness. Pleasant side effect – it seems to stop my hair getting oily at the roots on the second day after a wash. Built in dry shampoo? You tell me.

I reckon you should give it a go. It might not change your life, but it will certainly give you full hair.

Why you need it: Full, fat hair that smells good (that would be the Kakadu Plum, Lilly Pilly and Quandong). PLUS you’ll feel good about using it because O&M products are Sulfate, Paraben, MIT, Proplene Glycol, Phthalates and Triclosan free. They are nasty so you totally don’t want them in your hair.

Jurlique fruity goodness

I have talked about Kate Somerville’s wonderful fruit Exfolikate enzyme scrub before – it’s a staple in my beauty routine but it is a) not available in Australia and b) pretty expensive, so I was thrilled to bits to find out Jurlique have brought out their own Fruit Enzyme Exfoliator. Being a very lucky beauty blogger, the girls at Jurlique sent me one over to try so I could see how it matches up to my old faithful.

The ExfoliKate is a granular paste; Jurlique is a liquid. It is easier to rub the paste on because you can feel where it is going, but since you press the liquid in, it is less stressful on skin than rubbing.

ExfoliKate is in a tub with a press down distributor (which I feel often gives me just a bit too much); Jurlique is in a classic frosted glass bottle with pump on the top for easy access.

Once both are on you can feel the fruit enzymes working their magic, with mild tingling a sure sign that all those dead skin cells are being washed away. The result is the also the same – fresh, luminous skin. Bonus: this means anything you apply to skin afterwards is going to be more effective.

It comes down to personal preference of paste vs liquid, but the Jurlique one has a few advantages in my opinion:
• It smells amazing – this would be the desert lime, quandong and wattle.
• It’s certified biodynamic
• It’s Australian made – support local industry, mate
• It’s ridiculously cheap for what it is (I seriously was anticipating $75+ for this baby; not so)
• It’s locally available i.e. I don’t have to fly to Hawaii to restock. Hmmm...on second thought...

I am normally quite sensitive to most exfoliators, but my skin definitely appreciated this one and I enjoyed using it. Two thumbs up; would recommend. Just remember that anytime you use a product like this with natural alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) in it, that you must be even more diligent with your sunscreen. Not that you’re not already, I know, but I’m just sayin’.

This week I...

• Am in Melbourne to enjoy some tennis action at the Australian Open. If I don’t come home, it’s because I have run off into the sunset with Rafael Nadal or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. I’m not picky.
• Have had another cold, but Fess nasal spray fixed me right up. Good one, Fess. (Too much information? What do mean we aren’t that intimate yet?)
• Realised that it wasn’t just a fluke and I had actually found my miracle hair product.
• Have been taking videos of everyone and everything with the super cute Flip mini video camera. Stalker? Yes. Will hopefully have some videos to share from aforementioned tennis.
• Had dinner at Bird Cow Fish. I recommend the gnocchi.
• Started the countdown to my birthday (19 sleeps, just in case you don’t have your countdown going yet).
• Accidentally got sent American InStyle instead of Australian InStyle at work. Yes, my job is awesome. I devoured that baby cover to cover (although I’m not sure about Whitney Houston on the cover).

Montra Spa saved my soul

I have to admit that I haven’t been in a great place lately. I won’t bore you with the details, but I’m quite possibly more stressed now than I was before Christmas (which is really saying something). It doesn’t help that I’m a bit sick at the moment and I’m going away on Sunday, so that is just compounding my run-down-ness.

I left work a little early yesterday and on the way home realised that what I needed at that. very. moment. was a massage. I don’t think I have ever needed a massage more. Montra Spa has been on Crown St in Surry Hills for almost a year (maybe more?) and every time I walk past I peer in, but I had never thought to check them out. Silly.

It’s a really sweet little Thai spa, decked out beautifully with shiny wood, artefacts and loads of candles. My massage therapist, Lucky, was so super sweet, but massaging me is like kneading a pile of rocks, so the poor girl really worked hard for her money! I asked for the focus to specifically be my neck and shoulders and she was very obliging, adapting a couple of treatments to suit my needs. It’s always the sign of a good massage therapist when they can chop and change and react to what your body is doing.

After my massage, I sat in the lounge with a warm cloth for my hands and neck, and enjoyed a cup of tea (honey, ginger and spices? Tasty, whatever it was). Good God I walked out feeling better than I have in ages. I’m just disappointed that I hadn’t been in there sooner!

Price: Quick 10 minute massages start at $20. I had a 30 minute thai oil massage for $45, and they do 60/90/120 minute massages (bliss) for $80+. They also do facials and scrubs.

How to attract boys - nice smelling hair

Fact: 94% of boys like girls with nice smelling hair. This is not a made up statistic. It comes from the Institute Of Why Boys Like Girls; they are based in NSW, but work nationally.

Actually, Herbal Essences did a national survey that found over 70% of Australian women think men prefer the scent of their hair over their perfume. To that I say...well duh. I reckon on average Boyfriend compliments me twice a week on how nice my hair smells, but comments maybe once every few months, if that, on my perfume.

There is something very intimate about breathing in the scent of a girls hair, or “hair-sniffing” as I like to call it. It means that the boy has to be in close enough range to inhale your scent, preferably in some sort of snuggling arrangement. Boys like that. Girls like that too. See, mutually beneficial.

Anyway, I tried out the Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship shampoo, conditioner and treatment. It smells like red raspberry and satin. Before you ask me what satin smells like, I have no idea. But the shampoo smells really yummy and Boyfriend was all about the cuddles just so he could nuzzle my hair. Relationship win.

Primped VIP review - L'Oreal Studio Secrets Primer

Time for another round of Primped VIP reviews! This was definitely my favourite of the three products we were sent. I had been stewing over whether to buy the L’Oreal Studio Secrets primer for a while when, lo and behold, it landed in my lap (and I mean literally – when I opened the parcel it came rolling out and landed square in my lap).

The Studio Secrets Professional line was developed as a way of giving the everyday consumer (you and me) access to the sort of products that top make-up artists use. L’Oreal collaborated with Linda Evangelista as, let’s face it (ha!), she has had a lot of slap piled onto her mug over the years so she must know a thing or two about what works.

My first reaction when I opened the Smoothing Resurfacing Primer was confusion. In the jar it smells faintly like nail polish remover (?!) but once it hits skin it just smells kind of...creamy? Powdery? It smelled faintly of my Nan's powder when I was a kid, which I'm totally cool with because the scent doesn't linger once it's out of the jar. As for how it fells, well, it feels really weird – kind of like what velvet would feel like if it was a cream. It has a very distinct texture which is a result of the slippery silicon oil mixed with the powders. Once you buff it in though, skin is silky smooth and flawless. No kidding.

Take a little finger full and gentle rub into areas that need smoothing, like the forehead, around the mouth and the eye contours. Start inwards and move outwards, slowly rubbing it in circles to get it to smooth out. It gives skin a beautiful luminous glow while making it perfectly even – my foundation and blush went on better than it ever had before. Best bit? My foundation and cream blush stayed put ALL DAY.

I had a family thingy on one night last week and naturally there were some photos taken. You know what? I look good in them. Nevermind the fact that I had been at work all day and it was a balmy evening, my skin looked even and glowy. My usual primer is an illuminator, which this is not, BUT, this does have a subtle glow to it and it evens my skin out much more than my usual base. And you know what? It’s about $20 cheaper than my usual primer too.

I have been using this for about 3 weeks now and I’m not quite halfway through the pot. I will say already that I will definitely be replacing it when I run out. Would I recommend it? Yes. Just be careful if you have really sensitive skin because the silicon might clog pores if you use it too much.

Why you need it: I recommend giving it a crack just so you can see what it feels like! Seriously, great stuff if you don’t have 100% smooth and velvety skin already, because you will soon.

What's my fantasy?

As any big-boobied girl will tell you, finding bras to fit is tricky. Finding bras to fit that don’t look like maternity and/or grandma bras is even more tricky. God I wish Victoria’s Secret was in Australia. Thankfully, they ship internationally! Yes, I know we have discussed VS before, but my new order arrived yesterday so I’m all about the bra right now.

Having been to a store and been fitted properly, I know what size I am in VS so I can order online. If you haven’t been fitted in a store, you can still measure yourself at home with their very easy to follow step-by-step bra guide. Then it’s all a matter of choice. Seriously, Victoria’s Secret has so many colours, shapes, patterns, degrees of push-up, that there must be hundreds of thousands to choose from.

Personally, I tend to skip the Miranda Kerr push-ups and go straight to the DD options. Lined or un-lined? Demi or full coverage? This time around I picked 2 of the new VS Cotton, mainly because they come in 21 awesome colours but also because they are on sale 2 for $40. Oh, and because they are full coverage and mega-comfy.

So here I am, writing this blog post in my new VS Cotton pink stripes bra (yes, I look like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) and VS Pink college trackies (yellow...UCLA...go Bruins!). No top...why would I want to wear a top and hide this beautiful work of art? In fact, I may never wear a top at home again. I’m sure Boyfriend will appreciate it, but I don’t know how our other flatmate will feel. Hmmm...

Tough as nails

Way back at the beginning of December I was moaning on twitter about the fact that I was on my way out the door to an event but, having just painted my nails, silly me smudged 7 out of the 10 fingers and suddenly my mood was ruined. You guys know how precious I am about my manis, right?

Anyway, the beautiful Akisa of Akisalove and Beauty Swatch recommended I track down some Sally Hansen Insta-Dri so that I wouldn’t have that problem again. Goodness me, Akisa is not just a pretty face because this product is GENIUS.

Not only do your nails dry literally within 30 seconds (just like it promises on the box), but the anti-chip formula means your mani lasts longer with no chips and cracks. It also has the most incredibly shiny formula – it made my normally bright nail colour (in this case, Revlon’s Pretty in Papaya) really pop! Massively impressed. Bonus round: Insta-Dri has lovely UV filters to help prevent fading, yellowing and discolouration caused by sunlight, which is obviously a big win for summer nails.

Rosehip lovefest – hands

Do you like Terry’s Chocolate Orange? You know, the one that’s shaped like an orange and cut into slices? Orange chocolate seems to be quite polarising – you either love it or you hate it. Me? Love it. Love it.

So when I came across Grown Vanilla and Orange Peel hand cream I was off-the-chart smitten. It smells so amazing, like diving into a creamy bath of orange chocolate and vanilla cream. I have been sprung surreptitiously licking my hands on more than one occasion.

The fact that it’s organic, made from grape seed, wheatgerm, and sweet sweet rosehip oil also helps. You know, your hands are always a dead giveaway for your age. Rosehip lovefest - hair

I know I have mentioned this before, but one of my desert island beauty products is rosehip oil. Keeps me hydrated and dewy, heals my spots, cleans my oven – she’s a real smart cookie. So imagine my glee when I realised that three products that have all made it into the A-team beauty routine (we all do this – the A-team is the products you use every day, the B-team is the backups and occasionals) all have rosehip oil in them! No wonder I love them so much.

They are all pretty different products – shampoo, hand cream and skin serum. I’ll give you the run down on each over the next couple of days and then you might consider adding them to your A-team too (I highly encourage this).

After having my hair cut and coloured at Atlantis last month, I started using the Original & Mineral range of products (same people, same philosophy). My stylist advised which products were best for my hair; shampoo for fine hair, conditioner for normal hair – my hair obviously has an identity crisis. The fine hair shampoo is called Fine Intellect and contains chamomile for calming and rosehip oil for condition. Talk about a one, two combo! It’s also chock full of Provitamin B5 for hydration and, most importantly, Fine Intellect, just like all the O&M products, is sulphate, paraben, MIT, propylene glycol, phthalates and triclosan free. Did you know that propylene glycol is in antifreeze?! Yeah, I don’t want that on my hair, thanks.

I have also been using the Maintain The Mane conditioner, which doesn’t have rosehip oil in it, but we can celebrate it anyway because it does have rosemary & sage so it smells good. It also has silk protein so it leaves my hair in good nick PLUS it has UV protection, so it has eliminated one extra step from my routine in summer. High five.

Bringing light in - Omnilux

My skin has been in a terrible state the last week. Poor diet, breakout from a dodgy product and a lack of vitamin D has led to, well, this...



So I took myself off for some Omnilux and this is the result...

This is a picture of the Omnilux machine that I stealthily took whilst getting dressed after my treatment. The thing at the top with all the rows of little light bulbs gets lowered down over your face, while you blissfully lie there pretending to be somewhere tropical. A few days later and my skin still feels good. As the therapist explained, one treatment isn't a miracle cure and you do need continuous top-ups to get the real benefits of tissue repair - all salons that do Omnilux will generally sell a discounted 10 pack for this reason. Mind you, for the price of a 10 pack you could buy the at home device and suddenly become everyones best friend.

Welcome back for another year of trialling products, shopping, dodgy videos and lame jokes. I would regale you with all my grand plans for the blog for the coming year, but at this stage I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing and writing about what I love. Of course, I am always open to suggestions for things you want to see more or less of (less lemurs? No problem! Consider them gone) and I thank you for your continued support.
