Hot pants and blogger/PR talk on a Friday

I feel like I should provide some feedback on the PR/Blogger Meet Up that happened on Tuesday night. But first, I want to talk about the awesome pants I wore. So awesome.

It is insane how many compliments I got on my pants. They really are gorgeous though. The label is I Am and I got them from a local boutique called That Shop Everyone Talks About. They stock lots of local emerging designers and always have interesting pieces and cool jewellery (there is a knuckle duster ring I have my eye on). Anyway, as everyone keeps telling me, printed pants are in and these have a really flattering cut so I’m feeling pretty proud of myself right now.

Price: $100
From: That Shop everyone Talks About – 652 Bourke St Surry Hills

As for the PR/Blogger event, it went really well. Speaking in front of 100+ people is incredibly nerve-wracking and I was sweating like a pumpkin on Halloween beforehand. The feedback was all really positive though, and hopefully we gave all the beauty and fashion PRs a bit of insight into why we blog and how to best communicate with bloggers.

If you’re a blogger, I highly recommend you jump on over to iBlogFashion.com and download the first issue of iBlogBeauty – it’s worth reading through my article on what PRs think because there are lots of great insights from some of Sydney’s leading beauty PRs. And if you’re a newbie to the beauty blogging scene, my inbox is always open if you have any questions! Our community isn’t regulated like it is in the States, so it’s up to us to self-regulate with disclosure and honesty policies. Being recognised as a serious and credible medium is an uphill battle, but if we all work together and sing from the same songbook (preferably something with 80s power ballads in it, cos I like belting a good 80sPB) then it benefits everyone.

Whoa. Too much serious business for a Friday. We need to break this up with some light relief. I have just the thing...

Have a good weekend!! And Happy Halloween if you're that way inclined.

All aboard! Get some bus scroll action on your couch.

I really need to stop shopping online. Parcels keep turning up at work and I think ‘when did I order that?’ Bad.

BUT. I have to say I was pretty pleased with one late night Etsy order (and it kind of felt like Christmas when it turned up – oh look! Past Elise sent Future Elise a surprise gift!). I’m a little bit in love with bus scrolls and found this cool London bus scroll cushion cover that I had to have (read: didn’t really need, but wanted). Three days after I ordered it, it already lives on the couch. Welcome, new addition, I look forward to napping on you while I watch late night TV.

The INKTdesigns cushion is heavy duty cotton with the backing piece being lighter weight. One thing I was a little disappointed about was the finishing on the backing. Sure, no one sees it because the cover is envelope-style, but I’m kinda fussy about seams and things being even.

Now I just need a New York bus scroll cushion and a Sydney bus scroll cushion and my couch will be complete.

Price: US$35 (even though the designer is in Sydney – this is one of the things I don’t like about etsy)

Why you need it: The perfect gift for your pommy friend who has everything.

Time to get inspired

One of the most wonderful things about celebrating our engagement was all the beautiful cards we got from family and friends. Sweet and genuine messages of love and support that made my heart swell and even brought a tear to my eye. I'm a huge believer in writing sentimental messages on cards and I love when other people do the same for me (us).

I can't leave the cards up in the loungeroom forever (as much as I would like to), but I wanted to have a constant reminder of that special time and all the important people in our lives. Inspiration wall.

I'm forever gathering photos, images and bits & pieces to pin onto my inspiration board, but I figured why not turn a whole wall into one giant bastion of inspiration. Fun, right? The wall between my bedroom door and my bathroom is now a mix of engagement cards, photos, fashion images and other random cool stuff. Everytime I look at it, I smile.

The frames came from Ikea and Target, the lettering and giant pegs from Typo, and the bulldog clips from Officeworks - all stuff I had at home that just happened to be perfect.

Ikea - $2.99 for pack of two small frames, $3.99 for larger frame (all Nyttja range) - the quad frame is actually the inner from a bigger Ikea frame.
Target - $9.99 for two thin black frames (glass and backing discarded)
Typo - $2.95 for giant wooden pegs, letters $4.95 each or 3 for $10
Officeworks - no idea how much the bulldog clips are (I bought these ages ago)

Santorini Sun Tanning Lotion - the Greek Island tan without the jetlag

Fake tan is one of those things that everyone is on a never-ending quest for. The amount of SMS’s/tweets/phone calls/morse code messages I get from girlfriends (and the odd malefriend) asking me for the best brand for bronzing/best brand for staying power/best brand for non-stinky is crazy. My answer is always different depending on who I am talking to for one reason – skin tone.

Let me start by saying that I only use fake tan on my legs. I am far too uncoordinated to use proper fake tan on my torso, so I use gradual tan moisturiser. Specifically, Garnier Body Summer. It works for me, is the right shade for my skin and it’s klutz-proof so I can’t mess it up too much. Legs are a whole other ball game. I desperately love Garnier Amber Solaire Gloss Bronzer gel, but I’ll try anything.

Enter Santorini Sun Organic Tanning Lotion. I think they sold me when they said I would get a natural Greek Island sun-kissed glow, so I gladly accepted the sample on offer. I tried the liquid and it sprays on brown so you can see where it goes but disappears as you rub it in. My tan developed over about 8 hours and was just the right shade of golden brown with one coat (and not a trace of tandoori to be found!). Two weeks in a row and my legs had a perfect tan. Kapow! Shame about the weather.

It’s infused with Cecropia Obtusa Bark, which is a slimming and anti-cellulite ingredient. To be honest, I don’t think spraying it on once a week is going to be enough to get rid of my cellulite, but the colour is good and it gradually faded rather than doing that horrible patchy thing some other tans do. This is a total win in my book because I hate having to scrub tan off. I’ll be using this one until the bottle is empty and recommend it for my fellow fair friends. It would probably also be good for those who have olive skin, but maybe not for anyone fairer than me or with yellow undertones.

This week I...

...was a very bad blogger. Sorry for neglecting you, but I have been rather ill. I spent most of last week sitting in focus group viewing rooms or sleeping on the couch, neither of which is very conducive to writing blog posts. I’m sure you understand.

...tried Grass body wash from Lush. I didn’t think I would like it, but I really do. High five, bergamot, neroli and wheatgrass.

...tried Turkish Delight body polish, also from Lush. I really thought I would like it, but I really don’t. Too rose-y. Bummer.

...am speaking at the Sydney PR/blogger meet up. Naturally, a giant pimple is currently unpacking his bags and making himself cosy on my forehead.

...have two fab comps for here, and another amazing one over at The Nail File. Good times ahead, my friends. Good times.

Monday skin care musings and how to hide a blotchy patch

Not the best pic, but can you see the red on my neck? Exactly!
I had a facial in preparation for my engagement party (Priori Coffeeberry Peel and Omnilux red light – bliss) and then used a Decleor Intense Vitamin C Treatment for the few days between my facial and party to keep the glow up. Unfortunately, while my face was fine and glowy from the big boost of vitamin C, my neck didn’t like the C and had a bit of a red rashy reaction.  Ummm...totally not what you want 3 days before a party where you’re (one of) the guest(s) of honour!

Considering I was going to be photographed loads, it was either wear a really big scarf or do something to hide the damage. In hindsight, it was a cool night and a scarf might have worked, but my friend who works for Bare Minerals suggested I try the B.M. Matte mineral foundation. She’s a smart cookie.

I don’t normally like powder foundations but this was exactly what my poor neck needed! It covered the redness, looked natural and because it’s mineral it didn’t irritate my already irritated skin. In fact, I think it might have even helped. All I had to do was buff a little bit in and presto, blotchy be gone - because it’s matte, it blended right in (absorbs oil, eliminates shine, does a great rendition of Lucky Star by Madonna). I get red and blotchy skin on my face a lot and now that I have this in my arsenal I will be able to use it next time I have some sort of reaction (touch wood) and need to look normal.

Speaking of Priori Coffeeberry, this same friend gave me the Priori Coffeeberry Revitalising Cleanser to try because she had two (as you do) and holy frijoles it is good! It’s brown and smells a bit odd but it lathers perfectly and my skin always feels really clean after a wash. It contains coffeeberry which is the anti-ageing extract of the coffee fruit and it fights free radicals, so it’s an added boost to what my various serums and moisturisers are already doing. I feel like I need to start ramping up the anti-ageing products I am using because time is starting to catch up to me – how awful. Bonus: it also contains glycerine to soften skin and it’s non-comedogenic (won’t block pores/reduces pimples) – I’m a bit of a cleanser nerd.

Two excellent new products added to my shelf – thanks H!

Mecca Maxima opens in Melbourne; credit cards quiver in fear

SHOOT!

The new Mecca Maxima store in Melbourne is phe.nom.e.nal. I was incredibly fortunate to be taken down to Melbs for the opening of Mecca Maxima yesterday and it was so worth it, even with the crappy rain and fog and plane delays – you just like to be difficult, don’t you, Melbourne.

I was doubly fortunate enough to have a personal tour around the store from creator, big boss lady and all around inspirational chick Jo Horgan. Here is a special vid I took of Jo during my tour – she is explaining the concept behind Mecca Maxima and what makes it so special.

In a nutshell, it’s a beauty playground. I liken it to a religious experience (mecca...geddit?!) and the expression ‘kid in a candy store’ could not be more apt (unless I was actually IN a candy store – my sweet tooth is insatiable). Maxima has taken all the best brands from Mecca and kit: (Jo Horgan is the brains behind both, donchaknow) plus some extra brands for good measure, and made it accessible, interactive and educational (check out the touch screens and ‘talking’ shopping baskets). The staff are all trained to within an inch of their lives, specialising in different areas to maximise the amount of wisdom they can impart (I had a ball chatting to the fragrance expert – girl knew her tungstens* from her tuberoses) and gosh darn if it isn’t their job to make you feel welcome. You can tell the staff all live and breathe beauty and their enthusiasm is infectious.

Like a colourful beacon of hope!
All of this means it’s a FUN store to visit. You can spend hours browsing and walk out millions of dollars poorer, but you’ll understand what each product does and how it will work for you. I liken it to Sephora, but with friendly Aussie staff. May I make a suggestion, Team Maxima? Sydney. New Westfield. Get on it. Also, send Tony the Head of Colour up here please - that dude is hilarious!

Melbourne Mecca Maxima – Shop 54/55 Ground Floor LaTrobe Street Building (entrance via Little Lonsdale St) Melbourne Central

Too Faced, Smashbox, Korres, kit: - AND the prices are on the shelf in front of all the products
Skincare, hair and lux brands - heaven
Check out that range of fragrances! So many choices

Doing my bit for the economy, one online shopping site at a time

The dollar is so freaking good at the moment (hello, 99c) that I may have gone a littttle overboard recently. Like, two big Urban Outfitters orders, a Shopbop order and a handheld Omnilux overboard. Not to mention the F*ing unreal handbag I bought on Honey Honey!! Don’t shake your head at me, I’m just doing my bit for the economy. Or something. (this blog ain't called Stuff That I Bought for nuthin!)

Anyway, today I’m showing off my amazeballs Foley + Corinna handbag. I LOVE this practical style and the gorgeous, soft leather means it will be with me for many years and holidays. I say holidays because I had a bag very similar to this when I did a huge trip in 2008 (the bag died halfway through the trip, but that’s neither here nor there because it was a cheapie) and because it folds over, it’s perfect as a satchel for schlepping around when you’re shopping and aeroplane-ing. Such forward planning.

I have to give a massive shout out again to the Honey Honey team – honestly, some of the best customer service I have ever received. It’s always such a treat when a store (online or otherwise) take the time to talk to you, give you advice on your choices and clearly love what they do.

Speaking of loving what they do (bad segue, sorry) I was loving spending the night crawling through Shopbop last week. I ordered on Thursday night and had my order on Monday morning – ridonkulous! I treated myself to a Marc by Marc Jacobs Fantastical Tale Cat ring because The Fiancé encouraged me to buy it and I’m a total sucker for cats and cocktail rings (cattail rings?). Anyway, it’s well cute.

As for the handheld Omnilux? I’m trying to stick to a strict usage routine and I’ll keep you updated as I go. So far, I’m loving it sick.

I took my love down to Violet Hill - he said it smelled nice

I have said it before and I’ll say it again – boys like nice smelling hair. It’s a proven fact. Find me a boy who doesn’t like nice smelling hair and I’ll show you a boy with busted nostrils.

Herbal Essences clearly knows this and has done the boys of the world a favour again with their new Tousle Me Softly collection. Slick purple packaging houses a gorgeous range with wild violet fragrance (so yum), plus the 'in-shower' products also have splashes of pomegranate. Pom is obviously the current fragrance du jour, with a seemingly endless parade of brands producing body washes, creams, shampoos and candles scented with the scrumptious fruit. Suits me, I’m a pomegranate fan (the seeds are excellent over slow cooked lamb, and that is completely unrelated to what we are talking about).

There are five prodz in this range – shampoo, conditioner, mousse, hairspray and spray gel. Honestly, I think mousse is such an underrated hair product, and the Tousle Me Softly mousse is ‘level 1’ (out of 3), which means it’s soft and creates movement, not like the old-school crunchy mousse your mum used in the 80s to get that big standy-uppy hairstyle she liked to rock (Mum, I’m looking at you). I have been using a handful on damp hair; I scrunch it up and then dry it on low heat to create soft waves with lots of movement. Finish with a spritz of the hairspray for a bit of hold and shine – the hairspray bottle doesn’t say it gives shine, but I found that to be a bonus side effect. Easy peasy and looks like way more effort than it is. Exactly how I like my hairstyles.

Price: Hair spray - $6.99, Mousse - $6.99, Shampoo & Conditioner - $5.99 each, Spray Gel - $6.99 (such low prices for such pretty prodz)
From: The supermarket
Why you need it: For nice smelling, softly tousled hair. Next time your boy is nuzzling your hair and being all cute, just think of me ;)

Bring back the old Milo bar! The new new one is as bad as the old new one.

Do you remember the old Milo bars? Oh my goodness gracious I was OBSESSED with them. In case you missed the 90s, the old Milo bars were essentially Milo compacted into bar form and coated in chocolate. Total. Heaven. I have signed countless petitions and joined dozens of facebook groups to bring them back, but Nestle just don’t seem to be listening. Jerks!

Meanwhile, they brought out that crappy ‘Milo Energy Food’ bar - rice crispies and caramel with Milo that was, frankly, disappointing. Milo doesn’t belong with caramel and rice crispies! Bad. They discontinued it late last year.

Cut to me last week wandering into a convenience store to buy a bus ticket (My Bus 2 travel ten, in case you’re interested) and I spotted a Milo Bar on the shelf with a great big NEW shelf wobbler in front of it (although apparently it was new at the end of 2009 – still, got my attention!). I figured anything was better than the old Milo Energy poor-excuse-for-a-chocolate-bar and secretly hoped the new one was actually the old one. Oh, how wrong I was.

It’s a ‘milo choc brownie, smooth caramel & crunchy milo balls smothered in milk chocolate’. Have you ever had a chocolate protein bar? That’s what it tasted like. Don’t get me wrong, I like the odd chocolate protein bar, but the Milo bar has the taste and consistency of that sort of fake chocolate. And no actual powdered Milo in sight.

Nestle, please bring back the original Milo bar! I promise I will buy dozens of them! Sometimes Milo out of the tin just doesn’t satisfy me the way I know an original Milo bar would  (although it's still bloody satisfying).

Price: $3.06 for the twin pack from the convenience store in Pyrmont (I have seen them about $2.80 in the supermarket too)
From: wherever bad chocolate bars are sold
Why you might like to try it: If you like the taste of protein bars without the ‘health’ benefits.

Well wooden-shoe know it! I bought some clogs! (sorry, I had to do a pun for a Friday)

You know what this Friday needs? Shoe porn. And DAMN these Sempre di by Biviel shoes are fine.

When the modules first clomped down the runway in clogs at that fateful Chanel show in October 2009 (the same show that brought us taupe nails and Lily Allen singing in a barnyard) I was marginally horrified. Clogs were surely something that should be banished to fashion purgatory forever, along with stonewash denim and trucker caps. Twelve months later I did something I thought I would never do. I bought clogs.

Now these aren’t strictly authentic clogs (watch me justify it) because they are open toe. But...yeah. They are ridiculously comfortable and built to last – excellent quality leather and wood. These shoes are the kind of thing I will have for 20 years and then pass on to my very stylish daughter one day, whilst reminiscing about how I wore them to my engagement party, and did she hear about the funny speech her grandfather made that night. Then she will tell me she isn’t listening because she’s too cool and how that boy we don’t like is picking her up to take her out, and she’s wearing my clogs and an inappropriately short skirt. Ah teenagers.

What was I saying? Oh right. Let’s just enjoy the shoes.

As an aside, if you have blisters like I did (not from these shoes, but from some patent leather flats that shredded my toes) then I highly recommend Elastoplast Invisible Protection bandaids. They heal things up superquick and are literally invisible on the skin. I carry a bunch in my bag at all times because I'm such a klutz. ($4.49 for a 12 pack)

Price: $229.95 (I bought them on sale for $172.46)
From: Myer
Why you need them: They’re comfy, they’re cute and, if history has taught us anything, they will be back in fashion again in 10 years time. Think of the cost per wear value.

Beauty note: I have Essie - No Boundaries on my toenails. Is noice.

Make a CHOICE - do you trust the dryclean label in your clothes?

I always joke about the fact that I can’t have nice things because I have a tendency to spill red wine/spaghetti sauce/olive oil on expensive clothes, while the bargain finds are the ones that I wear for four seasons in a row. And while I joke, it’s totally the truth. $150 silk singlet from Country Road...olive oil salad dressing on the chest during the first outing. Did I mention it was cream? And dry clean only.

Ahhh...dry clean only. The bane of any wardrobe. Do you follow the care instructions inside your clothes? Does it have any influence over what you purchase? Interestingly enough, a report by consumer watchdog CHOICE landed on my desk last week (you know I love my stats) and in most cases when things go wrong with your drycleaner, it’s actually the garment manufacturers fault, and not the drycleaner.

Would you understand what these mean? Yeah, me neither
CHOICE tells us that the dry clean only label is where the problem starts (ironic, no?) Care labelling is mandatory in all clothing in Australia, but a dry clean only tag should only go in something when cleaning it with water will cause shrinkage, change in shape or colour change. Garments are also commonly incorrectly marked with the chemicals that can be used – so it may not be your drycleaners fault when your $500 Zimmerman dress comes back in a new size and colour (my dress wasn’t pink? And I’m not a size 4?)

While our designers are being overly cautious with their care labels, do you follow them? Personally, when I got dressing on my expensive singlet I used baby powder to get the oil out and then very cautiously hand washed it. It’s not that I don’t trust my drycleaner, but how can I as a regular person understand what the codes on the care tag mean and if it’s actually the right thing.  According to the CHOICE report, Sass & Bide have admitted they have labelled things incorrectly - how do we know who else does or doesn’t? Do you know the difference between the P and the F symbol? Didn’t think so.

I have a bag of winter clothes that need to go to the dry cleaners, but after reading this report I’m not so sure if I will now. Does someone want to come round and do my hand washing for me?

Thanks to CHOICE for sending me this report - fascinating reading! Check out http://www.choice.com.au/ for more details.

A fresh and easy hairstyle to go with your floral maxi

How kind of Ms. Critique to comment on my hair in yesterday’s post – you’re a good egg Ms. C and have provided the perfect segue into today’s post.

My bestie and I after enjoying the champagne and guava
I had my hair done for my par-tay by the lovely Larissa at Atlantis Hair. She did what I have dubbed the Lucinda Pitt braid. Lucinda, the glamorous beauty director at Grazia magazine, is somewhat known for rocking this particular French braid across the front of the hair. I would go so far as to say it’s her signature look. But you know what, I had no qualms about totally thieving it – I actually asked Larissa for a Lucinda. Cheers, L!

I had my hair done in the morning, so by the time I got to the party my curls had drooped (understatement). I fixed them, but the moisture in the air from the rain meant that was a total waste of time, and my dry shampoo was sitting on my dressing table about half an hour away. Eh. The braid was cool. The braid was also just as cool the next day. It’s a good style.

Price: I think this was just tacked on with my blow-dry – they start at $39.

Floral maxi = must have for summer. You can copy me if you like.

As I mentioned yesterday, I had my engagement party on the weekend. Bummer about the weather - it was a bit chilly and damp - but thankfully my Dad saved the day with four braziers to keep the crowd toasty.
Big ups, Mr. P!
Me and my two favourite almost-cousins.
Aren't they gorgeous?!
Naturally, I had a sleeveless dress. I could have predicted the weather from the moment I left the store 3 weeks ago with the dress in tow. But that's alright, I had a denim jacket and plenty of champagne & guava to stay warm. My dress was a gorgeous black maxi (fitted bodice, flowy skirt) with a pink and purple flower print. It's from Minty Meets Munt (called the Swifty Maxi) and the Minty girls were telling me that  they had the print custom commissioned and hand dyed for the Spring 2010 collection. I can tell it's hand dyed because there are imperfections in the print, and I love that. Doesn't feel so mass produced. Bless Minty Meets Munt.

The Minty girls were really cheeky and sold me the dress before it hit shelves, but I think it's in their store now. If not, there is a short version and pants in the same fabric. If you do buy something from this range, maybe call me if we're going to be at the same event. Could be awkward if we're unintentional twins.

Price: $189.95

Excuse me...

You: Hey Elise! It's a Monday, where's the post?
Me: Oh hey you! Did you have a good weekend?
You: Yep. Where's today's post?
Me: I had a great weekend too. It was my engagement party and it was just so much fun.
You: That's nice. Post.
Me: Yeah, it was just so lovely to spend time with family and friends. It was also pretty special that they all braved the wet to celebrate such an exciting occasion with my man and I.
You: Mmhmm...
Me: So yeah, I really appreciate you being patient with me and letting me off the hook today. It was a pretty epic weekend. BUT I'll tell you about the facial I had before the big night, the dress I wore, the makeup I wore and my hot new shoes tomorrow. Is that cool?
You: I guess.
Me: Thanks! You're a good friend. Enjoy you're Monday off!
You: But....
Me: Oh, you're in one of those non-public-holiday states? Well...have a good day anyway.

Slough in style with DayNa Decker

Warm weather + exposed skin = a desperate need for fake tan/wash off tan/bronzer/any sort of colour on my pasty white appendages.

In prepping my skin for the first fake tan of the season (I used a Natio tanner that smells like dettol and fish, and naturally it was a bit patchy) I remembered the joy of using a good body scrub. I always have the best of intentions over winter and then neglect the scrub when I’m covered by 10 layers of clothing every day (don’t scoff...I know you’re the same). To slough winter away I used a DayNa Decker Essence Buffer, a delicious exfoliant with fine pumice lava crystals. I have the Ella, which is mandarin, citrus, jasmine, tuberose and sandalwood. Translation: smells ace, feels good, does a kickass job.

What I really love about DayNa Decker though is the packaging. It’s so hot. Like, keep the body wash and exfoliant on your dining room table as a centrepiece kind if hot. The packaging for the body range is heavy olive green plastic with wood lids, and the candle range is the same olive green (although glass, duh). And while I’m talking about the candles, these are top of my wish list right now. The wicks are EcoWood, so they crackle as they burn and the flame is a teardrop shape. As a candle lover, these are just to die for. Potential Christmas gift-givers, take note.

What was I talking about again? Oh right. DayNa Decker. A totally luxe indulgence (way more expensive than a regular scrub) but worth it to spoil yourself. And for the awesome bottle.

(PS - no idea why it's DayNa, but I do know Dayna was a top Ford model, so maybe it's a model thing)
